One of the most common questions Catholics are asked is:
"Why do Catholics adore the Eucharist?"
Some even say,
"Isn't that just a piece of bread?"
But here is the real question:
If the Eucharist is truly Jesus Christ, should we adore Him?
The answer is not found in Catholic opinion.
It is found in Sacred Scripture.
Let us begin with the words of Jesus Himself.
At the Last Supper, Jesus did not say,
"This represents my body."
He did not say,
"This symbolizes my body."
He said,
"This IS my body... This IS my blood." (Matthew 26:26-28; Luke 22:19-20)
The Greek text is even stronger.
Jesus uses the word "estin" (ἐστιν), which simply means "is."
There is no hint of symbolism in His words.
Jesus meant exactly what He said.
But perhaps the clearest proof comes in John 6.
After multiplying the loaves, Jesus declared:
"I am the living bread which came down from heaven... the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh." (John 6:51)
The Jews were shocked.
They asked,
"How can this man give us his flesh to eat?" (John 6:52)
If they had misunderstood Him, this was the perfect moment for Jesus to explain that He was speaking symbolically.
Instead, He became even more emphatic.
He said:
"Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you." (John 6:53)
The Greek becomes even more striking.
Jesus changes the ordinary word for "eat" (phagein) to "trogein", which literally means "to chew," "to gnaw," or "to feed upon."
He was not weakening His teaching.
He was strengthening it.
So much so that many disciples left Him.
Notice something astonishing.
Jesus did not run after them saying,
"Wait! You misunderstood Me!"
Instead, He turned to the Twelve and asked,
"Will you also go away?" (John 6:67)
Why?
Because they had understood Him correctly.
The teaching was difficult.
But it was true.
Now ask yourself this:
If the Eucharist is truly Jesus...
how should we respond?
The answer is found throughout the Bible.
Whenever people encountered God, they worshipped Him.
The Magi fell down and worshipped the Child Jesus (Matthew 2:11).
The disciples worshipped the risen Christ (Matthew 28:17).
St. Thomas, seeing the risen Lord, cried out,
"My Lord and my God!" (John 20:28)
If Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist, then the only fitting response is exactly the same:
Adoration.
Catholics do not adore bread.
Catholics adore Jesus Christ truly present under the appearances of bread and wine.
This is why we genuflect before the tabernacle.
This is why we kneel during Benediction.
This is why we spend hours before the Blessed Sacrament.
Not because the Host is magical...
but because the Host is Someone.
It is Christ Himself.
St. Augustine beautifully said:
"No one eats this Flesh without first adoring it."
Even in heaven, the worship never ends.
The Book of Revelation shows the whole of heaven falling before the Lamb:
"Worthy is the Lamb who was slain." (Revelation 5:12)
Every Eucharistic adoration on earth is therefore a participation in the worship that is already taking place in heaven.
The Eucharist is heaven hidden under the veil of bread.
That is why Catholics adore it.
Because where Jesus is...
worship naturally follows.
